The Prince of Beggars
R I Y A D

Ht: 5'9  /  Wt: 150  /  Hair: dark brown /  Eyes: brown
Age: 18  /  Creed: Mendigos  /  Status: ACTIVE

Riyad is the heir apparent to the leadership of Los Mendigos in Ladroa. Once, he served as the protege and lieutenant to the old king, Salvador, and headed up the Mendigos youth gangs in the Bosque with a mix of cunning and smirking bravado. Now it falls to him to lead the clan into a new era... or to ruin.

THE WIDOW DELOSA

Lady Delosa is a lifetime resident of Ladroa, the last member of a minor noble house that owns slate quarries in the Kastros region to the south. She is affluent and well-established, with ties to various trade associations within Ladroa.

Delosa has lost two sons, one killed during the War of the Phoenix, and the other lost at sea during the last Expedicione. Her older husband died of natural causes more than a decade ago, leaving her with their slate interests, a respectable fortune, and a small estate in Kastros which she has not visited in quite some time.

Once, her family was more directly involved with construction within Ladroa, as well as the trade and transport of slate, but since her husband's death, much of that administration now rests with Pardo, a notary and accountant who serves the family.

HRETH

Crow, Fae-Touched, magically enchanced

Hreth was a common crow befriended by the druid Korvuus. By sacrificing the enchanted dagger known as the Redeemer, Korvuus was able to cast a spell of Awakening on the bird, granting him enhanced sentience and the ability to speak human language.

Since that time, Korvuus has shared more of his power and knowledge with Hreth, granting the crow access to new mystical abilities.

The MOON COURT

NOBLES of the SILVERED REALM

The Moonfae held great power in The Age Before, both on Earth and in the Faerie realms. The White-Gold King watched over the world from his palatial seat upon the the lunar surface, and was served by his Moon Court, a council formed by the most elevated nobles of the Silvered Realm.

These are no mere Elves, but highborn Sidhe - ethereal entities yet untethered to the mortal plane. They appear as very tall, elongated, colourless figures that seem always to shimmer with a flickering otherworldly light. They are ageless, nigh-immortal creatures with vast arcane power.

The houses of the Moonfae number twelve, and each is ruled by a Liege who bears the house regalia - symbolic artifacts fashioned as extensions of their own being.

Of Bronzanti's Generals, Argus the Beautiful is the one charged with the security and defense of Castle Dreist. Equipped with multi-faceted eyes of Faerie glass, and a versatile, calculating mind enhanced by various stimulants too concentrated for normal human consumption, Argus not only sees all, but has the capacity to parse and react to what his multitude of eyes behold.

From outward appearances, Muse was Amadeo Bronzanti's most sophisticated mechanical being. Possessing exceptional powers of reason and eloquent speech, Muse displayed a high degree of versatility and autonomy. Acting as personal aide, research assistant, and constant companion to the master, Muse was responsible for coordinating affairs in Bronzanti's absence, seeing to the maintenance needs of Bronzanti's Three Generals, and generally keeping Castle Dreist running like a well-oiled clock.

However, in truth, Muse was something much, much more...

IRONHAWKE

Inheritor of the Hawk Talon Fist

E F R A I M   v a n   H O C K E
martial artist, pit fighter

Ht: 5'10 / Wt: 170 / Hair: blond / Eyes: grey
Age: 23  / Creed: Torvar / Status: MISSING

For the last five years, the young pit-fighter calling himself Ironhawke has carved out a name in bare-knuckle arenas around the Helicosian. Using a blend of both esoteric and practical techniques, he is becoming a star attraction, but little is known about his training or his past.

Ironhawke's style foregrounds speed, agility and strong offense, combining acrobatic maneuvers, rapid kicks, and precise hand strikes. His most devastating move is the Hawk Talon - a vicious technique that fashions a man's hand into a vise-like claw, capable of severing tendons, breaking joints, or even bending steel with only the strength of his fingers.

Since the raid on Magoa, Ironhawke has been missing. Injured while fighting alongside Kuan against enslaved Blue Lightning-addicted pit-fighters, both were overtaken by the Wards of Mortlac (Whisperers) and their mysterious leader. Dying from receiving the Saint's Palm, Kuan miraculously recovered, and savagely murdered most of the Wards in a blind rage. When he awoke covered in gore, there was no sign of either Ironhawke or the Mortlac heir. It is assumed that both or either escaped the Magoa catacombs through the same route, while Kuan was unconscious and the rest of the Company were kidnapped to faerie demiplanes.

As the malformed, unnatural product of one of Bronzanti's attempts to clone a new body for himself, Castor is perhaps Bronzanti's most successful failure. For this reason, he became both the object of his master's favour... and his utmost contempt.

As the doors swung wide, the figure by the fire rose from his chair. He was tall and broad-shouldered, his hair a flowing mane of chestnut waves, with only a hint of iron grey at his temples. His features were strong and symmetrical, with a regal bearing and his beard full, but carefully groomed. His eyes glinted sharply, like shards of volcanic glass, complimenting his severe expression. His voluminous plum-coloured robe seemed bulky, but underneath, golden armour gleamed, and in one hand he brandished a great sword pulsing with rivulets of lightning.

AMADEO BRONZANTI*

mage, alchemist, engineer, would-be god

Don  A M A D E O   B R O N Z A N T I
Cyron Imperial War Magus of the Protean Order,
Warden of Obrau, Lord of Castle Dreist
---------------------------------
Ht: 6'5  /  Wt: 200  /  Hair: white /  Eyes: brown
Age: ~600  /  Creed: Capracian /  Status: *UNKNOWN (previously Deceased)

With a steady clicking noise of unseen machinery, a gilded grate in the wall slid open and a fluted brass wheelchair emerged from within, trundling along recessed channels in the tiled floor.

Piled upon the chair was a dark mass of opulent robes and quilted blankets. From their folds protruded a man's head, bald and shriveled, lending the hunched figure a silhouette not unlike an obese vulture.
His skin was brown like old leather webbed with creases and cracks, and stretched over the all too visible contours of his skull. His thin iron-grey hair looked like it had perhaps once been luxuriant, but it had long since retreated in infantile wisps to the furthestmost regions of his scalp. The sparse remains of his beard were neatly trimmed, lending his gaunt face a faded vestige of masculine severity.

The robes were a deep rich wine colour, hemmed with a splendid bronze-hued brocade. Around his scrawny neck he wore an ornate copper gorget - a grandiose accessory which may or may not have served to hold the weight of his head upright.

The whites of his eyes were so densely bloodshot, they seemed to blend with the brown irises, but his pupils remained sharp and black...

Amadeo Bronzanti was both a relic of a bygone era and also a radical proponent of new and terrifying sciences. As a retired Imperial Magus in the last days of the old Cyron Empire, he hid himself away from the world, extending his life unnaturally, and conducting his secret experiments in his tower high atop Mount Donnerquell. This was all in preparation for the day he planned to make himself a god and lead humanity into a new dawn.

Bronzanti employed many sorcerous, alchemical, and technological methods to prolong his lifespan. While these did not quite grant him the immortality he craved... it did transform him into something not entirely human.

The Caglianni who goes by the name Salva would appear to be the very epitome of his order. He is a dark, intimidating figure who goes about his duties with implacable fervour and unflinching solemnity. By the weight of his office and sheer force of personality, he commands both fear and respect. Beyond this, he seems to possess great physical and magical power, and a calculating, incisive intellect.

The thing calling itself Yaroon was a psychic monster of tremendous malevolence and power. It made its lair in a cave system far beneath what is now the city of Oranda. There, It was bound by Unseelie sorcery for untold centuries, until It was finally freed by the Bletcher Fellows, and recruited to the cause of the Black Sun.

Awakened from Its long slumber, Yaroon mentally controlled simple-minded subterranean monsters and send them forth into Oranda serve It. Weakened with hunger and the winter cold, Yaroon regained strength by consuming the living brains of humans kidnapped by the minions It enslaved.

The WHISPERERS

The Wards of Mortlac

These mysterious figures, sometimes called the Whisperers or the Tridents, are members of a secret organization involved in the theft of at least one of the Three Blossom Society's sacred scrolls. Making use of specialized skills and techniques, these agents operate as spies and assassins. They appear to be working in cooperation with the unidentified traitor disciple of the Three Blossoms, although their true goals and allegiances remain unclear.

Their leader squatted on an old bushel of thatch, with a gnarled walking staff gripped upright in one hand, like a king holding court. A wineflask was tied across his chest and a patchwork quilted mantle was thrown over his shoulders, somehow both shabby and majestic at once. He was the oldest among them, his face a thicket of iron-flecked whiskers and his brow webbed with creases - but he was still likely younger than he appeared.

Salvador is the former leader of the Mendigos of Ladroa, and is still often referred to as Ladroa's “King of Beggars" -- even though he has not been seen in the city for some time.

AL-SIJAD

The Silk Merchant of Ladroa

AYAN  AL-SIJAD

Ht: 5'8  |  Wt: 175  |  Eyes: brown  |  Hair: black  |  Age: 50

Ayan Al-Sijad is a prominent Talumar silk merchant who has made his home in Ladroa. Although not a full citizen, he wields substantial influence over the textile market, and has many connections with the caravans and sea trade going in and out of the city.

The Kidnapping

Al-Sijad's 12-year-old son, Amaro, is the apple of his eye. While slumming with youth gangs in the Puerto against his father's wishes, Amaro was kidnapped by procurers for the Cult of Agruesh that was operating out of the Colegio district

Not trusting local authorities to get the job done, Al-Sijad devoted considerable monies to turn up a lead. Unable to find local muscle to help him, he hired the brash young Capracian pistolero named Lonzo to get his son back.

In a fortunate coincidence, Lonzo encountered his former comrades Jack, Kuan, Kian, and Korvuus at the cult's hideout, and the heroes joined forces to raid the secret temple together. They were able to liberate the abducted children before the followers of Agruesh could subject them to untold horrors. Appalled by what they discovered, they meted out harsh justice to the members of the cult.

Gratitude and Charity

Al-Sijad was extremely grateful for the return of his son. As most of the other rescued children were orphans or kidnapped children far from home, Al-Sijad agreed to take responsibility for the other liberated prisoners. He has also found jobs for some of the older children in the Calle Seda, but the youngest children were remanded to the care of the newly-opened Orphanato del Cinzento (sometimes called "the Grey Shelter") operated by the Grey Stripes, and subsidized with donations from Al-Sijad.

Al-Sijad is considered friendly to the Tyrson Company, and to the Grey Stripes as well. He is a valuable ally in the Mercado of Ladroa.

AMARO AL-SIJAD

Ht: 5'5  |  Wt: 110|  Eyes: brown  |  Hair: black  |  Age: 12

Amaro is the son of one of the richest merchants in Ladroa, but has no interest in silks or trade at this stage of his life. Instead, he is fascinated by the Roofdancers of Ladroa, especially by the fact that many of them are barely older than himself - a fact that causes his father no end of consternation. He often neglects his studies and sneaks out to mingle with the rough-and-tumble kids who make the streets of the Puerto their playground.

The CARABASSI

claws of the Ascenzia night
The Carabassi family has long dominated the underworld of Ascenzia. For several generations, this shadowy family has had a hand in every kind of crime in the port city, from the cutpurses of Sinner's Landing, to protection rackets on the Slope, and even in the noble intrigues of the Constellazione district. Whatever the game is, they always get their cut.

It is also known in Ascenzia that you don't cross the Carabassi. By day, they swagger around the streets with seeming impunity. By night, they rule by the law of the knife. It's said that those they mark will never see them coming; the Carabassi see everything, and move like ghosts through the knotted alleys.

The Carabassi act somewhat like a thieves' guild, but with a strict hierarchy based on family lineage. Although the Carabassi broker jobs and collect tithes from the local operators, only blood relations are permitted entry into the organization. It is said that the Carabassi line has its origins in far away Koshkovia, but now has branch families throughout Delon and Capracia.

A traveling minstrel specialized in plying her trade in the war-camps, Hexcora has crossed Duatha several times over in the trains of many armies. Although mainly known for her poetry and song, it is rumoured that her talents extend to sorcery as well.

While most are charmed by her jocular presence and musicality, others call her a witch, and whisper that wherever she goes, strange events and bad luck follow. Despite these misgivings, most are satisfied to have her on their side, to ensure such misfortunes befall the enemy instead.

SWORDSMEN of DUATHA

The Praesidian Challengers

The Grand Prince Escaeda has caused a great stir in the martial world with the announcement of his tournament of swords.

Rumours now swirl about in the noble courts, in the sword schools, in barracks, and in mercenary dens -- who has won or lost a medallion? And who holds one now? And for those who aspire to the Praesidian Challenge, who do they choose to test themselves against?

Thus far, the grapevine has only confirmed five Medallion-holders out of the full sixteen. Although they come from different backgrounds, each is a redoubtable swordfighter with a storied history:

  • LADY PIRADA, the Saint of Atalante (Iagos)

  • Sir NOAH BLACKFALL, rogue knight (unknown)

  • XATAXES of Dumacia, gladiator (Old Cyrona)

  • Chevalier DAMION ST-LOIC, courtier (Athagon)

  • Captain JANOS SZARCO, hussar (DEFEATED)

Other medallions are said to have turned up in major centers of Capracia and Torvaria, as well as the mercenary ports of Delon... but exact details are spotty, and accounts often mention different names. It seems the dust has yet to settle in some places. Some have theorized that several medallions may not even be on the continent.
