Jack Tyrson served under Septimo in the Black Bull Company in his youth. Septimo left the Black Bulls some time before the company famously disbanded under shadow of scandal in the last years of the War of the Phoenix. He has since maintained friendly ties with Tyrson.
As peace began to settle over the empire after the wars of succession, Septimo headed up a small band of mercenaries in the employ of Guiseppe Dorini (mayor of San Belamo), charged with removing the local Valducci landowners from power. Septimo had promised to include Jack on the job, but Tyrson was unavailable due the prolongment of the siege at Anbur (in Delon). In the end, the job turned sour and Septimo's defeated group was obliged to take a payout and quit the field.

Septimo is a stern-faced man with dark hair, a sharp, manicured beard, and an aquiline profile. He prefers relatively somber garb compared to most condottiere. In the field, he favours a suit of blackened half-plate with silver edging and typically carries a matchlock musket and a poleaxe.
