COCKATRICE VENOM EXTRACT

magical poison

This flask appears to be made of Faerie Glass, with a latched stopper crafted in a serpent motif. The liquid inside is a marbled grey -- five doses of a magical extract created from the venom of the feared Cockatrice.

The petrification power of the Cockatrice's bite is notorious but thankfully temporary. Even so, the effects of a concentrated solution such as this can be quite dramatic.

Any organic tissues that comes into contact with the venom will rapidly be turned to stone. In dead or inert matter, the transformation is usually permanent, but in a living organism, the metabolism will usually return to normal in under a day's time. One dose of venom is usually enough to coat a single, handheld object and turn it to stone.

When used as a topical agent on a living creature, the venom will gradually petrify surface areas of a person's body over 10 minutes, although they will not fully turn to stone. Although this process is rather painful and inflicts d6 damage, movement may not be affected so long as joints are not touched.

When used invasively, such as when coated on a weapon, the effect is more serious. The victim must make a DC13 CON save. On a failed save they take 2d6 damage, are Poisoned for 6 hours, and move at half Speed. If they are successful, they take half as much damage and bear only superficial stony patches which clear up in a day.

A target who fails their initial save and is Poisoned must then make a second save at the end of their next turn. On a success, their condition stabilizes. On a failed roll, they take a further 2d6 damage, and become Petrified for 24 hours.

A creature who actually ingests a dose of venom must save vs DC15 and rolls double the normal number of poison damage dice.

Note that the metabolism of a creature who dies while under the effects of the venom will not recover, and their body will remain petrified forever.

  • plants/dead organic tissue is permanently petrified
  • topical application lasts 1 day, d6 damage
  • in combat: DC13 save vs 2d6 dam, Poisoned & half move 12h
    • next turn: DC13 save vs 2d6 dam & Petrified 24h
  • ingested: DC15 and damage dice are doubled
  • flask contains enough for FIVE doses
