This decorative cloth pouch contains a hundred or so rather ordinary-looking pebbles, although close inspection shows that each has a tiny hole bored through it. There is a current of magic that weaves through the entire bag, linking each stone to the next.
This allows these tiny charmed stones to lay a temporary path through even the densest terrain, or to mislead unwitting travelers into getting lost in the wilderness.
When the owner of the bag places a few stones on the ground, a small open path springs up that seems like a credible and well-traveled route leading in whatever direction is chosen.
From there, the stones must be lain continually, to create a path up to 9 miles long, or as long as the owner wishes to travel. With each stone lain, the path stretches backward to the last stone, continuing the trail.
The path created by the stones lasts for approximately 24 hours, fading with the light of dawn on the following day. At this point, the enchantment will pass. The area it transformed will return to its previous state and the stones will become ordinary nondescript pebbles again.
Unused pebbles may be saved for another day, but will not be able to create a new path until the previous path has disappeared. If the user wishes to undo the magical path early, they must carefully retrieve each pebble in order, provided they can remember where they laid them. Retrieved pebbles lose all magical properties once they are removed.
