magic item
A gnarled wooden staff, six feet in length, carved in the elongated likeness of a bearded, robed man.
Magical examination reveals that it is adorned with discreet arcane symbols in complex arrangements which seem to depict a wide array of magical schools, but most strongly invoking the spheres of Transmutation and Enchantment.
- magical focus, usable for all casting classes
- permits casting of a second spell as a Bonus action (x3/LR)
- both spells may use Concentration
- when harmed, caster must make a Conc check for each spell
When a caster uses this Staff of the Wizened as a focus, they will find that they only need to initiate the spell and invest it with their energy. From there, it feels like the staff itself knows what is required, and guides the spell to completion.
As a result of this “assistance" the caster may, as a Bonus action, cast a second spell on the same turn. However, as the spell requires the exertion of mystic energies to initiate, the caster must have enough spell slots available to devote to this activity.
This ability may be used three times per Long Rest.
Additionally, the staff seems able to provide the minimal Concentration requirement to sustain the first spell, which means the caster may then focus their Concentration on their second spell freely.
Note that although the first spell can be maintained, it cannot be additionally controlled, changed, or redirected. Shifting focus to control the first spell will require breaking Concentration on the second.
Additionally, any event that provokes a Concentration check from the caster instead provokes TWO checks, one for each spell.
It is believed that the Staff of the Wizened is not simply a magical artifact, but actually a magical prison, and that the arcane glyphs upon it are a powerful enchantment that has transformed or confined a living being (likely a mage) into the form of the staff.
Thus, the power of the staff comes at a price - the knowledge that the creators of the staff have enslaved a sentient being and reduced them into a cruel (if effective) weapon.
